Dubrovnik

Jutting out on a peninsular chunk of the Dalmatian coastline, the former Republic of Ragusa is a Venetian Gothic marvel. Columned porticoes and loggias rim marble-paved Renaissance squares buffed to a sheen by centuries of foot traffic.

Vis

Of all the Croatian islands, Vis is the most mysterious – even to locals. The furthest of the main central Dalmatian islands from the coast Vis was cut off from foreign visitors from the 1950s right up until 1989. The isolation preserved the island and now international and local travellers alike flock to Vis, seeking authenticity, nature, gourmet delights and peace.

Hvar

Blessed with a picturesque natural harbour, elegant 17th-century piazza and a striking Renaissance cathedral and arsenal where ships once docked for repairs (now a modern art gallery), the island of Hvar has always been one of Croatia’s biggest draws.

Brač

Zlatni Rat, on Brac’s south coast, is Croatia’s most photographed beach, and its top windsurfing spot. The nearby fishing village of Bol may have succumbed to multi-lingual menus and a miniature-train, but it remains a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Besides windsurfing, Zlatni Rat offers scuba diving, sea kayaking, parasailing, water skiing, jet skiing and wakeboarding. For the uninitiated, pedal boats provide a taster.
